Amy: Hey guys, this is Amy here with Curtis from RealEnglishConversations.com. And today in our conversation we’re going to be talking a bit about social media. So when I say social media, what am I talking about, Curtis?
Curtis: You’re talking about websites such as Facebook, YouTube, Google +…
Amy: Twitter. Pinterest. What else is there?
Curtis: Oh…
Amy: Reddit.
Curtis: Instagram.
Amy: LinkedIn.
Curtis: Oh, there’s so many of them.
Amy: There’s so many. There’s probably 15 or 20 of these.
Curtis: There’s probably a few that being created and popping up right now that we don’t even know of.
Amy: Yeah. Things we haven’t heard of yet.
Curtis: I remember there was a time in my life where there was no social media.
Amy: Oh, there was no internet at a time in your life. And to be fair to a lot of our listeners, because technology has really evolved in a fairly short period of time. So you did a little bit of research. So what are the most popular social media sites right now?
Curtis: Most popular social media sites, well, Facebook and YouTube.
Amy: They’re kind of tied, right?
Curtis: They’re…yeah. They’re in the top spot. They’re neck and neck.
Amy: Neck and neck. Yeah. Look at that. Especially at the same time.
Curtis: And then it’s followed by Twitter. And then Google +. And then other platforms.
Amy: So what I found interesting was when I asked Google that questions, what are the most popular social media sites? For some reason they didn’t have YouTube as part of the list of these other sites, like Facebook and Twitter and everything.
Curtis: So it wasn’t ranked among them?
Amy: No. But I feel like YouTube is definitely a social media website. There’s a comment area; you can like videos; you can share it. It has all of the characteristics of a social media site. It has a newsfeed, like…
Curtis: I think the word social is a big part of social media, right…
Amy: Well, of course.
Curtis: You’re being social.
Amy: It’s about having a bit of a community and people comment on videos, they share their opinion. If they find a video interesting, they can share it on their newsfeed or with their friends. And you know, that’s kind of how these websites work. So what are the main social media sites that you use?
Curtis: I would say Facebook would be number one.
Amy: Yeah. Um-hum.
Curtis: For me. And number two, YouTube, for sure.
Amy: Okay.
Curtis: And for you?
Amy: Probably the same. I use…I use YouTube more than I use Facebook, actually. I just find YouTube is a lot more useful for many different things. So what purpose do you use Facebook for? Like what does it give you that makes you use that the most?
Curtis: Okay. There’s a couple different uses that I have for Facebook.
Amy: Okay.
Curtis: It keeps me connected to people that, say, live in Edmonton, the city I used to live in.
Amy: Um-hum. The city where you grew up.
Curtis: Right. This keeps me in contact with people that I went to high school with and stuff like that. Which is really interesting to me. I like finding out what’s new in their lives and Facebook shows that.
Amy: Okay. Another reason?
Curtis: The other reason is because I like to follow musical groups.
Amy: Okay.
Curtis: And they often post new updates or tour dates, or new songs.
Amy: So you use it as a way to stay informed for the pages that you like?
Curtis: Yes.
Amy: Okay. And what about YouTube?
Curtis: YouTube, I like to use it for learning how to do things sometimes.
Amy: Okay.
Curtis: And most for discovering new music.
Amy: Okay.

Để cải thiện khả năng nghe tiếng Anh, chỉ xem để tìm ra những phần nghe khuyết sau khi đã cố gắng nghe nhiều lần, nhiều lần mà vẫn không thể nghe ra chính xác những từ người bản xứ nói. Làm vậy để hình thành dần thói quen không lệ thuộc vào phụ đề. Khi xem phụ đề, chú ý cách người bản xứ nối âm trong từng câu, ngữ điệu, trọng âm lên xuống, những ending sound của những từ đứng đơn lẻ ngoài -s, -ed ví dụ như list, rest, like, watch, of ... (ghi nhớ ending sound sẽ giúp nghe được nối âm một cách tự nhiên), và những phát âm dạng rút gọn 's, 've, 'd, 're ... sau đó đọc lại từng câu đúng theo những chú ý này. Đọc làm gì? Luyện nghe thôi đọc làm gì? Thứ nhất để rèn khẩu hình miệng cho speaking, khi nói một câu dài, có rất nhiều chỗ mình tưởng chừng dễ nhưng khi nói thì méo hết mồm như kiểu bị ngắn lưỡi vậy, và chỉ luyện nói mới giúp mình phát hiện và cải thiện được những chỗ khuyết này. Thứ hai cũng là để cải thiện nghe, mình không nghe được chính xác từ mặc dù đã biết từ đó vì trong đầu đang tồn tại một phát âm sai của từ theo kiểu Việt hóa (do nhìn thoáng qua từ và đoán phát âm hoặc nghe được từ những người xung quanh phát âm sai nên cũng hình thành phát âm sai theo - tất cả đều là mình không cẩn thận trong việc tự tập phát âm chuẩn). Vì vậy việc đọc ra thành lời là cực kì quan trọng.

Mình thiết kế một trò chơi nhỏ ở dưới đây để luyện viết và rèn trí nhớ (luyện não - Train The Brain). Nó gồm những từ mới mình đã đề cập ở đầu bài viết. Cách chơi: Với những gợi ý là nghĩa của từ, mình sẽ viết ra từ được nói đến ở đây bằng tiếng Anh. Có 2 chức năng kèm ở đây là chọn giọng nói và tích hợp thêm tìm kiếm hình ảnh (ghi nhớ từ qua hình ảnh). Bắt đầu thôi.

Mẹo nhỏ nhắc nhở mình học tiếng Anh
Trước khi kết thúc, mình muốn chia sẻ nốt một mẹo cho những bạn mới học và rất rất rất lười lười lười giống mình. Xuất phát là một đứa lười, nên mình hiểu việc tạo một thói quen học tiếng Anh là rất khó, nhiều lúc biết nguồn hay để học tiếng Anh, nhưng cũng lười đến nỗi chả buồn vào. Vì vậy mình chợt nảy ra một ý nghĩ nếu bật trình duyệt lên mà trang cần học có sẵn ngay thì sao nhỉ, chắc chắn là lười quá mức thì vẫn sẽ tắt nó đi rồi mở tab facebook hoặc tab xem phim như bình thường, nhưng ít ra nó đã nhắc nhở mình cần phải học tiếng Anh, học luôn và ngay, hơn là vào lại trang đó, tìm tìm phần cần học nghe đã muốn lười.
